The FAA has mandated changes to color vision screening.  As of January 1, 2025, only several groups of pilots are required to perform color vision screening for medical certification.  These include:

1. New applicants at all class levels.

2. Previously certified 3rd class pilots who have LOEs or SODAs for color vision who wish to upgrade to 1st or 2nd class.

3. Pilots with certain medical conditions or who are taking medications that could affect color vision.

Anyone else holding a valid medical certificate without color vision restrictions, who has passed a color vision test during a previous flight physical, will no longer need to perform color vision screening during their routine flight physicals, unless they develop a medical condition or start taking a medication that may affect their color vision. 

 

Some AMEs might not purchase the required software and may require pilots to go to another clinic to get testing performed.  If you are going to an AME who does not have the testing available, you should have your color vision test performed before you go for your flight physical and you should bring the results with you to the appointment.

Flight Med Clinic Color Vision Testing

• The version available through the Flight Med clinic is the Waggoner color vision test.

• Testing Options - If you wish to have testing performed through the Flight Med clinic, testing can be performed through:

  • A visit specifically to perform only the color vision test ($150).  If you are interested in color vision testing only, please contact Dr. Olson by filling out the form below and indicate your request for color vision testing only.

  • During your flight physical ($100 - Note: prices for First-Time Flight Physicals include the price of the color vision test)  

• Results - Results can be faxed or emailed to your AME or to the FAA upon your request.
